Am I Alone? I Actually LIKE filling out the tax forms…
January 7, 2008 – 3:49 pmHa ha…. I’m sure the thought of filing taxes is making some hearts beat a bit faster. Either you owe the IRS some money, or just hate dealing with all the forms.
Me? I love filling out our taxes. I’ve done it for years, started way back when with a pencil, paper and calculator. Now I feel pretty snazzy doing it online. I’m hoping to avoid ever needing to have a professional file our taxes for us; but it seems every year the amount of forms we need to fill out gets longer and there is more research involved.
Call me a geek but I love messing with numbers and filling out the tax forms fits right in with that. For years I loved seeing a huge refund at the end (big DUH! on my part) now my goal is to see a $0 at the end. I don’t want to owe the IRS; and I don’t want them to owe us. My husband works hard for the money and we can put it to better use than letting the IRS borrow it for free all year.
We’ve adjusted our withholdings quite a few times last year. According to my rough estimates we will still get a refund. grrr…
- Estimated Federal Tax Refund - $1,000
- Estimated State Tax Refund - $570
The refunds will be nice, but I’m a bit disappointed. We adjusted the withholdings pretty high and it still wasn’t enough. I use the IRS Withholding Calculator four or five times a year to see how on track we are to having the right amount of taxes withheld and adjust accordingly. What seems to trip us up is the bonuses my husband receives. Bonuses are taxed a flat 40%. It doesn’t matter if you claim M-22 or S-0; 40% is still coming off the top when bonuses are paid. It’s company-wide and I’ve heard of other companies in the area doing the same thing. So it might just be a North Carolina thing, I’m not sure?

I usually like doing taxes, but this year our return is going to be pretty complicated for a variety of reasons. I’m trying to decide if I’m up for doing it myself, or whether I should just pay someone to file for me.

Lynnae,
That’s right, you have the self-employed business to file. I did that for a few years, but it was on such a small scale that I was able to do it myself. That was back when I used to mail my tax returns in.
Do you file online? I usually use Turbotax, but I don’t know how thorough it is with home businesses. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.
Good luck with your taxes this year-I hope they turn out pretty easy for you to do.

I also like to do my taxes. I like to see hwo much money I made from work, investment, and general whatever. I have to admit that I enjoy getting a refund because it’s a nice chunk of change that I will be able to beef up my emergency fund with!
