DIY Landscaping: The $1,200 Disaster Adverted

After being blown away by the $1,200 quote to remove the extra dirt from our lot I put my stress to good use. When the grading contractor left I went online and logged onto Craigslist, FreeCycle and my neighborhood message board. I posted an ad at all 3 websites. It read:
Free Fill Dirt
Must load and haul away.
I remember seeing an ad for free dirt once while poking around on Craigslist and I figured it was worth a try.
Within one hour I started receiving emails from people interested in our free dirt. And yes, they were going to load it and haul it away for FREE!
Last night one of the respondents came by to look at the dirt. He is going to come back by today to start loading it into his truck. Strangely enough, he is going to shovel it all by hand. I sure hope he brings some friends to help him. Regardless, the dirt will be gone.
And I won’t have to pay $1,200 to get rid of it.

That’s great you were able to get rid of the extra dirt and at a HUGE savings!

That’s very cool…and creative. I also found that people will haul your scrap metal away for free as well.

Singleguymoney,
Yeah. We are pretty happy about that. The $1,200 estimate put me into panic mode.
Pinyo,
It’s bad enough having a big pile of dirt around, I don’t need extra scrap metal too.
Thanks. Good tip. Hopefully one I’ll never have to use

Who would have thought dirt could be so expensive; and on the same aspect, so cheap!
Nice work - First time visitor, will be back.
