A Question for My Readers?

I need your help. This Friday is payday. We will be making our flight reservations for our Christmas/house-hunting trip that day (with cash baby! No credit for us. woohoo! This is huge because in the past we would have charged the tickets ages ago without thinking twice about it) Anyway…
I need to know, where do you typically find the best deals for plane tickets? We will be flying from NC to California in December. Please leave a comment and let me know where you’ve had the best luck getting cheap tickets, what airline etc… Any tips for me? Is it cheaper to fly on a certain day?
I want to make this money streeeeeeeeetch as far as it can go (I’ve got to budget for a rental car, gas and food too).
Thanks ya’ll!

I like to use www.kayak.com. You can input your trip’s criteria (cities, price range, connections) and it will scan tons of travel sites to help you find the best deal.
I’ve heard people get great deals using Jet Blue, but I haven’t tried them.

I don’t fly often. Last time I bought tickets on Expedia, and I kept plugging in different dates until I got the cheapest price.
I’ve heard Southwest has a program called “Ding Deals” or something like that where you can sometimes find really good deals.
Where in CA are you looking to move? I grew up in CA, and now I’m just over the border in Oregon.

“Ding deals” hmmm…for some reason I think of a “dent and scratch” sale, so the plane I’m flying might be one of their dinged up planes? ha ha, just kidding.
We are looking at moving back to socal, somewhere in San Diego county. I’ve never been to Oregon, heard it’s gorgeous though. Actually, I’ve never been farther north in California than Santa Barbara. :p
Kacie,
Never heard of kayak before, I’ll have to check it out. Thank-you!

LOL I think it’s more like “ding, the bell is ringing”. I know that sometimes they have flights for $25-$50 one way.
San Diego is beautiful. That’s where I went to college.

I like Expedia because it’s user friendly. I’ve used them a number of times.
But I’ve found it’s actually cheaper to identify a flight on Expedia, then book it directly through the airline offering the flight. You’ll usually save $20-$30 per seat this way.
Another option–although it’s kinda scary for a planner like me–is to simply walk up to the desk at the airport and buy a plane ticket for a same-day flight.
Timothy Ferriss, the author of The Four-Hour Workweek, says he saves hundreds of dollars using this method. Granted, he’s single with no kids, so he’s in a better position for (quite literally) “flying by the seat of his pants.”

Ryan,
Yeah, I don’t think I could fly by the seat of my pants with 3 kids. The thought alone scares me. But it’s something I’d consider doing with my husband when the kids are all grown up and gone.
